Dotto Talks about Students in Education

Steve Dotto has been regarded as an education-friendly techno-geek for some years now. I've had the opportunity to hear him present at various conferences about the role of technology in Education, and his experiences as a tech, student, and father.

Recently, he posted this commentary about education students in today's world.

Web 2.0 Bubble

We all remember the tech bubble... don't we? We should...

With tech companies valuations going off the charts again, there are a lot of the same signs that Web 2.0 may match Web1.0 in terms of the bubble. Here's an interesting take on the possibilities:

I talk here about the world students are entering, and how it's different from the world we know, yet there is certainly some truth to the old adage that 'history repeats itself.' Is there a happy medium between preparing our students for the world to come, but making them mindful of the mistakes we've made?

Who are our students?

Still more commentary about how the children we are educating are not entering the world we know... yet we continue to use traditional methods to try to teach them.

Why do we continue to use 19th century teaching methods to teach 21st century students?

TooFast Survey Tool

Mr. Corbett shares this new program aimed at surveying students:

Bruce Ravelli and Zvjezdan Patz, who brought us FAST, has now release the second generation of their tool, Too FAST. This is the a great web-based tool for surveying your students. It is easy to use, free and designed for instructors to use with their students. This new version was built in PHP and has many improvements over the older FAST:

  • You can have more than 20 items in your survey.
  • There is more flexibility if the item formats
  • And there are standard items available to use.
This is a great tool for surveying your students that takes very little time to setup and administer.

Go to http://toofast.ca/ to sign up for an account.

I have not yet used this program, but I will be looking for an opportunity to try it. If you use it, please share your feedback.
